When you own any vehicle and driving it in Indian roads then carrying registration certificate of the vehicle is equally necessary along with driving licence. Original RC book is necessary as per Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and if you’ve lost it then you can apply for the duplicate RC book online as well.

If you don’t have driving licence, then you can apply and check driving licence application status online or if you have lost your driving licence, then you can also apply for the duplicate driving licence and check its status online.

A registration certificate or RC is a document issued by RTO which guarantees that you are an authentic owner of the vehicle approved by Indian government.

When you purchase the new vehicle then as per the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988, RTO issues registration certificate to you at the time of delivery of vehicle. In some states, a temporary registration certificate is issued at the time of delivery of vehicle which is valid for one month from the date of issue and cannot be renewed after that.

Registration certificate of the vehicle is valid for 15 years from the date of issue and after expiry of the the date, it can be renewed for a period of next 5 years.

The registration of a vehicle in any state or Union territory has to be done in accordance with the rules of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Steps to Check RC Status Online

Now if you want to check RC status Online, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways – Government of India has facilitated the digitization of vehicles in Vahan portal. In such a way, you can also find the owner of the car, bike or any other vehicle. Follow below steps to check RC status online-

  1. Go to Vahan site or Parivahan site for the Vehicle registration status
  2. If you visited in the first link given above then give your mobile number and captcha code in the space provided, if account is not created then create account link in the page should be clicked. After login into the site, navigate accordingly and give details as asked in the page such as vehicle registration number, application number etc.
  3. If you visited the second link given above then Select the menu option labeled “Online Service” and then select “Vehicle Related Services” sub menu option.
  4. On the Vehicle related services page, choose the state from which the registration certificate was applied for from the drop-down option (sometime asks for the login into the site if not logged in, then login please).
  5. Give here Application number or Registration number, Select RTO etc. and enter the Captcha code in the space provided. These options are applicable when you selected any state other than Delhi (the options may vary depend on the state selected). If you have selected Delhi as your state then it will ask for the Application number after selecting menu “Know Your Application Status.”
  6. In the Vehicle registration status page, enter the vehicle number and verification code to check RC status page (sometimes it asks for the state name then select the state your vehicle is registered and then enter your mobile number you have given at the time of registration, if not sure then click on the Create Account link and register on the site first, you can refer the article on how to link mobile number to registered vehicle if needed)
  7. After entering the captcha code and your application number or registration number as well as RTO, then click “Submit” or “Proceed” button.
  8. Click on the “View Report” menu item.

In the next page, vehicle details such as registration number, registration date, chassis number, engine number, owner name, vehicle class, fuel type, maker/model, fitness/registration expiry date, insurance details, emission norms, RC status and Financier name along with registering authority name is shown.

How to Check Vehicle Registration Certificate Details with SMS on Your Phone

Users can view the vehicle’s RC status and owner information by SMS in addition to performing an online RC check. You can get information about the vehicle, including the make and model, insurance information, RC/FC expiration date, and owner’s name, by sending a message.
