PM E-DRIVE Logs 11.47 Lakh EVs and 8,147 Chargers – What It Means for India’s EV Push

India’s PM E-DRIVE scheme is showing how quickly electric mobility is moving beyond a niche market. The latest dashboard snapshot recorded 11,47,889 registered and temporary EVs for FY 2026-27 as of 21 October 2026.
At the same time, the government has approved support for 8,147 public EV chargers across three oil marketing companies and 10 states. Together, these figures show progress, but they also need to be read carefully.
What the 11.47 lakh EV number actually shows
The dashboard figure is a financial-year registration snapshot, not the total number of EVs sold in India since the scheme began. It includes 10,41,183 registered vehicles and 1,06,706 temporary registrations.
Electric two-wheelers form the biggest share, with more than 11.41 lakh entries. E-rickshaws, e-carts and e-trucks make up a much smaller part of the total. This is not surprising. Scooters are usually the easiest first EV purchase for urban riders because running costs can be lower and home charging is often possible.
For example, a commuter travelling 25 km daily may find an electric scooter easier to manage than an electric car, especially when public chargers are still unevenly available.
Charging approvals are not the same as live chargers
The 8,147-charger figure is encouraging, but it does not mean every charger is already working. The Ministry of Heavy Industries had approved Rs. 851 crore for their deployment by 28 September 2026. These approvals cover three oil marketing companies and 10 states as mentioned in PIB press release.
A charger becomes genuinely useful only after it is installed, connected to power, open to the public and compatible with the vehicle. For an EV owner planning a highway trip, the key question remains simple – is there a working charger on the intended route?
Why PM E-DRIVE matters
PM E-DRIVE was launched to support faster EV adoption, expand charging infrastructure and strengthen India’s EV manufacturing ecosystem. It covers electric two-wheelers, selected three-wheelers, e-buses, e-trucks, e-ambulances, charging facilities and testing upgrades.
Eligible electric two-wheeler buyers can receive an upfront incentive through an e-voucher, subject to the scheme’s terms and model eligibility. The current support for eligible registered e-two-wheelers is Rs. 2,500 per kWh, capped at Rs. 5,000 per vehicle.
