Astrogate Labs Eyes India’s First Indigenous Optical Inter-Satellite Link – What It Means for Space Connectivity

Astrogate Labs, a Bengaluru-based space-tech startup, is developing what it describes as India’s first indigenous Optical Inter-Satellite Link, or OISL. The company has set a target of flight readiness in 2027.
This is an important distinction. The technology has been unveiled and is under development, but it has not yet been deployed in orbit. If the planned mission succeeds, it could become a major step for India’s satellite communication capabilities.
What is an optical inter-satellite link
An optical inter-satellite link allows two satellites to exchange data using laser beams instead of conventional radio signals.
A simple way to understand it is to imagine satellites creating a high-speed light-based network in space. Rather than sending all data down to a ground station before forwarding it, one satellite can pass information directly to another satellite.
This matters because modern satellites collect large volumes of images, weather data, mapping information, and communication data. Traditional radio-frequency links have limited bandwidth and operate in crowded spectrum bands. Laser communication can carry more data through a much narrower beam.
Astrogate Labs says its technology is based on Free Space Optical Communication, where data travels through light in open space. The company also demonstrated AstroLink Micro, a 10 Gbps space-to-ground laser communication terminal, at Bengaluru Space Expo 2026.
Why this technology is difficult
Sending a laser beam between moving satellites is not easy. Both satellites travel at high speed and must point at each other with extreme accuracy. Even a small movement can interrupt the link.
That is why an OISL terminal needs precise pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems. These systems find the other satellite, lock on to it, and maintain the connection as both objects move through space.
Astrogate Labs has already worked on satellite-to-ground laser communication. According to the company, it has supplied an indigenous laser communication terminal to ISRO. The proposed OISL project takes the next step by enabling satellite-to-satellite data transfer.
Benefits for India
The biggest benefit could be faster movement of satellite data. An Earth-observation satellite, for example, may capture high-resolution images of farms, forests, coastlines, or flood-hit areas. With optical links, that data could potentially move through a network of satellites before reaching the most suitable ground station.
This can help reduce delays in receiving important information. During a natural disaster, faster satellite data may support damage assessment, route planning, and emergency response. In agriculture, more frequent and timely imagery can help with crop monitoring. Defence and maritime operations may also benefit from secure, high-capacity communication links.
The project also has a strategic value. Building the terminal in India can reduce dependence on imported components for a critical part of future satellite networks.
Astrogate Labs and its competition
Astrogate Labs was founded in 2017 by Nitish Singh, Yogeshwaran Jayaraman, and Subhajit Chakraborty. The startup develops laser communication terminals for satellite, ground, and space-to-space applications.
The company operates in a technically demanding global market. As per Inc42, Astrogate’s international competitors include optical communication companies such as Astrolight and Archangel Lightworks, alongside larger space players including SpaceX. The difference is that Astrogate is trying to build this capability with technology developed and manufactured in India.
