Astrogate Labs, a Bengaluru-based space-tech startup, is developing what it describes as India’s first indigenous Optical Inter-Satellite Link, or OISL. The company has set a target of flight readiness in 2027.

This is an important distinction. The technology has been unveiled and is under development, but it has not yet been deployed in orbit. If the planned mission succeeds, it could become a major step for India’s satellite communication capabilities.

What is an optical inter-satellite link

An optical inter-satellite link allows two satellites to exchange data using laser beams instead of conventional radio signals.

A simple way to understand it is to imagine satellites creating a high-speed light-based network in space. Rather than sending all data down to a ground station before forwarding it, one satellite can pass information directly to another satellite.

This matters because modern satellites collect large volumes of images, weather data, mapping information, and communication data. Traditional radio-frequency links have limited bandwidth and operate in crowded spectrum bands. Laser communication can carry more data through a much narrower beam.

Astrogate Labs says its technology is based on Free Space Optical Communication, where data travels through light in open space. The company also demonstrated AstroLink Micro, a 10 Gbps space-to-ground laser communication terminal, at Bengaluru Space Expo 2026.

Why this technology is difficult

Sending a laser beam between moving satellites is not easy. Both satellites travel at high speed and must point at each other with extreme accuracy. Even a small movement can interrupt the link.

That is why an OISL terminal needs precise pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems. These systems find the other satellite, lock on to it, and maintain the connection as both objects move through space.

Astrogate Labs has already worked on satellite-to-ground laser communication. According to the company, it has supplied an indigenous laser communication terminal to ISRO. The proposed OISL project takes the next step by enabling satellite-to-satellite data transfer.

Benefits for India

The biggest benefit could be faster movement of satellite data. An Earth-observation satellite, for example, may capture high-resolution images of farms, forests, coastlines, or flood-hit areas. With optical links, that data could potentially move through a network of satellites before reaching the most suitable ground station.

This can help reduce delays in receiving important information. During a natural disaster, faster satellite data may support damage assessment, route planning, and emergency response. In agriculture, more frequent and timely imagery can help with crop monitoring. Defence and maritime operations may also benefit from secure, high-capacity communication links.

The project also has a strategic value. Building the terminal in India can reduce dependence on imported components for a critical part of future satellite networks.

Astrogate Labs and its competition

Astrogate Labs was founded in 2017 by Nitish Singh, Yogeshwaran Jayaraman, and Subhajit Chakraborty. The startup develops laser communication terminals for satellite, ground, and space-to-space applications.

The company operates in a technically demanding global market. As per Inc42, Astrogate’s international competitors include optical communication companies such as Astrolight and Archangel Lightworks, alongside larger space players including SpaceX. The difference is that Astrogate is trying to build this capability with technology developed and manufactured in India.

Key takeaways –

Astrogate Labs’ planned Optical Inter-Satellite Link is not a consumer internet service. It is infrastructure that could help satellites exchange large amounts of data more quickly and securely.

The company is targeting flight readiness in 2027. If successful, the project could support India’s growing satellite ecosystem, improve access to timely space-based data, and strengthen domestic capability in advanced laser communication technology.

On September 7, 2026, Pixxel announced a $100 million Series C round, the largest private funding round yet in India’s space-tech sector. The Bengaluru and Los Angeles-based startup was founded in 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal.

Pixxel is not trying to be just another satellite company. It began with hyperspectral imaging, which is a fancy way of saying its satellites can see far more detail than a normal camera in space. That kind of data can help track crop stress, water pollution, mining activity, forest loss, and climate change in a much smarter way. In simple terms, Pixxel wants to help people see problems earlier and act faster.

What the funding is really for

The new money is meant to help Pixxel move beyond one product and build a wider space-data business. The company says it will use the capital to expand its Honeybee satellite network, improve its Aurora software, build more government-ready space systems, and scale manufacturing in India and the US.

That mix matters. Better satellites bring in better images. Better software turns those images into useful answers. Stronger manufacturing makes the whole operation faster and more reliable. Put together, it means Pixxel is trying to become a complete space business, not just a satellite launch story.

This round also tells us something important about investor thinking. Backers are not only paying for a bold idea anymore. They are betting on a company that has already shown real progress. Pixxel says it has launched six Firefly satellites, launched Aurora, and won or secured work with organizations such as NASA and the US National Reconnaissance Office. It has also been active in Indian government-linked space projects.

Why investors backed it so strongly

The round was co-led by Temasek and Seraphim, with 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment joining in. Existing investors such as Radical Ventures and growX Ventures also took part. Pixxel says its total funding now stands at $195 million.

That scale of support usually comes when a startup moves from early promise to clear execution. Investors want to see technology that works, customers that care, and a market large enough to grow into. Pixxel seems to have reached that point.

Another reason this funding stands out is timing. India’s private space sector is expanding quickly, and space is no longer being seen only as a government domain. Startups now have room to build satellites, launch vehicles, and data services for commercial and national use. Pixxel sits right in the middle of that shift.

Who Pixxel competes with

Pixxel is not in the same lane as rocket makers like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos. Those companies focus on launch vehicles. Pixxel, on the other hand, is focused on Earth observation and the software that makes satellite data useful.

A closer comparison is SatSure, founded in 2017, which also works in Earth intelligence and decision-making tools built from satellite data. That is the real race here – not just who can reach space, but who can turn space data into something practical for businesses and governments.

Conclusion

Pixxel’s $100 million raise is bigger than a funding headline. It shows that investors believe Indian space startups can build serious global businesses. It also shows how the sector is moving from isolated innovation to a more complete market, where satellites, software, and services all matter.

For Pixxel, the goal is clear. Use the funding to grow faster, build smarter systems, and make space data useful for real-world decisions. For India’s startup scene, the message is even bigger. Space tech is no longer a distant idea. It is becoming a real business category.

Key takeaways –

Pixxel was founded in 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal.

The startup raised $100 million in its Series C round, its biggest funding round so far.

The money will support better satellites, stronger software, and larger manufacturing capacity.

Pixxel’s closest competition is in Earth intelligence and satellite data, not rocket launches.

The deal signals strong investor confidence in India’s space-tech market.

Agnikul Cosmos has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Finnish space technology company ICEYE to explore building, launching and operating SAR Earth observation satellites from India. This is an important step for India’s private space sector because it brings together a homegrown launch startup and one of the world’s strongest SAR satellite companies.

Agnikul Cosmos was founded in 2017 by Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM, Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy and Janardhana Raju. The Chennai-based startup is incubated at IIT Madras and is working on flexible small-satellite launch vehicles.

ICEYE was founded in 2014 by Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila in Finland. The company is known for its Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites, which can capture images of Earth even at night or through clouds.

What this MoU means

The agreement is not a commercial launch contract yet. It is a partnership framework where both companies will explore how SAR satellite systems can be developed, launched and operated from India.

In simple words, Agnikul brings launch capability. ICEYE brings SAR satellite experience. Together, they may help create an India-linked Earth observation system that can serve civil, commercial and possibly government needs.

This matters because satellite launches are no longer only about putting big spacecraft into orbit. Many businesses now need smaller satellites, faster launch schedules and more specific orbits. Agnikul is trying to serve that exact market.

What are SAR satellites

SAR stands for Synthetic Aperture Radar. Unlike normal optical satellites, SAR satellites do not depend on sunlight. They send radar signals toward Earth and read the reflection that comes back.

This means SAR satellites can see through clouds, smoke and darkness. That is very useful for a country like India, where monsoon clouds can block normal satellite imaging for days.

For example, during floods, optical satellites may struggle if the sky is cloudy. A SAR satellite can still help map water spread, track damage and support rescue planning. The same technology can also help in agriculture, defence monitoring, disaster response, mining, insurance, shipping and infrastructure checks.

Why this is a big leap for Agnikul

Agnikul has already made headlines for its private launch work. Its Agnibaan SOrTeD mission in 2024 was an important test because it used a single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine and launched from India’s first private launchpad at Sriharikota.

The startup’s main idea is flexibility. Its launch system is designed for smaller payloads that need dedicated access to space. Instead of waiting for a ride-share launch where many satellites go together, a customer may want a launch built around its own mission.

That is where this partnership fits well. SAR satellites often work better when placed in the right orbit for frequent revisits. A flexible launcher can help customers choose mission-specific timing and orbit.

What ICEYE brings to the table

ICEYE brings deep experience in SAR satellite systems. The company says it operates the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation and offers monitoring services for governments, insurers, banks, utilities and disaster response teams.

This experience is important because SAR is technically complex. Building the satellite is only one part. The harder part is making the data useful.

A satellite image by itself is not enough for many users. A flood agency wants to know which areas are underwater. An insurer wants to understand damage. A government wants quick intelligence during emergencies. ICEYE’s strength is in turning radar data into timely insight.

Why India needs more SAR capability

India faces floods, cyclones, landslides, coastal risks, forest fires, border monitoring needs and fast urban growth. All these areas need reliable Earth observation.

SAR satellites can help when normal imaging is limited. During heavy rain, a SAR image can still show where water has spread. During night-time incidents, it can still capture ground changes. For agriculture, it can help understand crop and soil conditions even when clouds are present.

This does not replace ISRO or existing public satellite programmes. Instead, it adds private-sector capacity. A stronger private space ecosystem can give India faster innovation, more launch options and more commercial opportunities.

Business purpose of the partnership

The purpose of the MoU is to create a path for India-based SAR satellite missions. If the partnership moves ahead, it can help both companies.

For Agnikul, it can bring serious payload customers and prove that its launch model can support advanced Earth observation missions.

For ICEYE, India offers a large market and a strong space ecosystem. Launching or operating more SAR capacity from India can help serve South Asian use cases and support local partnerships.

For India, the benefit is strategic. It can strengthen domestic launch activity, improve satellite data availability and bring global space-tech collaboration into the country.

Competitors and market context

Agnikul is not alone in private launch. In India, Skyroot Aerospace is another major private rocket startup. Globally, companies like Rocket Lab have built strong businesses around small-satellite launches.

In SAR satellites, ICEYE competes with companies such as Capella Space, Synspective and other Earth observation players. India also has startups like Pixxel working in satellite imaging, though Pixxel focuses on hyperspectral imaging rather than SAR.

This shows that the market is becoming specialized. Different companies are building different layers of the space economy – launch vehicles, satellites, imaging data, analytics and mission operations.

Challenges ahead

The partnership still has work to do before it becomes a real launch programme. Both companies will need to handle technical integration, regulatory approvals, payload planning, launch schedules and customer demand.

Space missions also require high reliability. A small launch vehicle must place the satellite in the right orbit. A SAR satellite must deliver useful data after launch. Ground systems must process that data quickly.

Cost will also matter. Customers will compare Indian launch options with global providers. Agnikul will need to show that its flexible launch model is reliable, affordable and mission-ready.

Conclusion with key takeaways

Agnikul Cosmos and ICEYE’s MoU is a meaningful step for India’s private space journey. It connects Indian launch capability with global SAR satellite expertise and could open the door for more Earth observation missions from India.
