Microsoft Launches Fourth Cloud Region in India to Power AI, Data and Faster Digital Services

Microsoft has launched its fourth cloud region in India, with the new India South Central region now live in Hyderabad, Telangana. The move strengthens Microsoft’s cloud and AI infrastructure in the country at a time when Indian companies are moving more workloads, customer data and AI projects to the cloud.

This launch is important because cloud regions are not just big buildings with servers. They decide how fast apps work, where data is stored, how businesses recover during outages, and how easily companies can run AI tools at scale.

What is Microsoft’s fourth cloud region in India

As per Microsoft and MoneyControl, the new Hyderabad region is called India South Central. It joins Microsoft’s existing Indian cloud regions in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai.

The company now operates four cloud regions in India – Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, West India in Mumbai and India South Central in Hyderabad. Microsoft also has two datacenters in partnership with Jio, named Jio India West and Jio India Central.

Microsoft says the Hyderabad region has three availability zones. In simple words, this means the region is designed with separate infrastructure points so companies can improve reliability and business continuity. If one zone faces a problem, workloads can be designed to keep running from another zone.

Microsoft’s earlier footprint in India

Microsoft’s local cloud journey in India began in a big way in 2015, when it launched Azure services from local datacenter regions in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai. That gave Indian businesses the option to host data closer to users and meet local data residency needs.

Over the years, this footprint became more useful for banks, government-linked services, IT companies, startups and large enterprises. The rise of AI has now made local cloud capacity even more important.

Microsoft has also linked this expansion to its larger India investment plan. Its latest India cloud push follows major investment commitments announced in 2025 for cloud and AI infrastructure.

What changes after this expansion

The biggest change is more local capacity. Indian companies using Azure, Microsoft 365 and AI services will have another region to run eligible workloads. This can help reduce latency, which means apps may respond faster when users are closer to the Hyderabad region.

The second major change is better disaster recovery. For example, a bank using Microsoft’s Central India region can use Hyderabad as a recovery location for important systems. HDFC Bank has already been named among early customers using the new region for resilience and AI workloads.

The third change is stronger support for AI. AI tools need heavy computing power, fast data movement and secure storage. With more cloud capacity inside India, companies can test and run AI projects more confidently, especially in regulated sectors like finance, healthcare and digital payments.

Why it matters for businesses and users

For a regular user, this expansion may not be visible directly. But it can affect the apps and services people use daily. Banking apps, insurance portals, payment platforms, customer support tools and business software can become more reliable when companies have stronger local cloud infrastructure.

For businesses, the benefit is more practical. They get better data residency options, more choices for backup planning, and easier access to modern cloud tools without depending only on faraway regions.

Competitors and market view

Microsoft is not alone in India’s cloud race. Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud and other data center players are also expanding in India. The competition is rising because India’s demand for cloud, AI and data storage is growing quickly.

Microsoft’s edge is its deep enterprise base through Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows, GitHub and Copilot. Many Indian IT companies and large enterprises already use Microsoft tools, so a larger local cloud footprint can make adoption easier.
