Mahindra Scorpio Leads India’s 7-Seater SUV Segment in September 2026 – Exploring Features, Specifications and Rivals

Mahindra Scorpio continues to be one of the most popular 7-seater SUVs in India. Its strong road presence, powerful engines and rugged design have helped it remain a favourite among family buyers and SUV enthusiasts.
However, one clarification is important. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga led the overall 7-seater car market in the latest available September data, while the Scorpio remained the leading 7-seater SUV nameplate. Mahindra reported 64,092 domestic SUV sales in September 2026, but it did not publish a complete model-wise sales breakup in its official monthly announcement.
As per AutoPunditz, Mahindra sold 17,313 units of Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic while Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sold 16,911 units marking a 40% YoY growth, reflecting strong demand for practical seven-seaters among families and commercial buyers in September 2026.
Why the Scorpio remains popular
The Scorpio is not designed like a soft family MPV. It offers a tall driving position, bold styling and a traditional SUV feel. This makes it attractive to buyers who want a vehicle for city use, highways and occasional rough roads.
The Scorpio nameplate includes the Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic. The Scorpio-N is the more modern and feature-rich model, while the Scorpio Classic continues to offer a simpler and more rugged approach.
Mahindra Scorpio-N features and specifications
The Scorpio-N uses a body-on-frame platform, a layout commonly associated with tougher SUVs. It is available with both petrol and diesel engines.
The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces around 203hp. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is available in different power outputs, with the stronger version producing 175hp and up to 400Nm of torque. Both engines can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, while automatic options are available on selected variants as per Mahindra owner’s manual.
Selected diesel variants also get Mahindra’s 4Xplor four-wheel-drive system. This includes a low-range gearbox and helps the SUV handle challenging surfaces more confidently.
Depending on the variant, the Scorpio-N can offer:
- Six- or seven-seat layouts
- Large touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Connected car technology
- Dual-zone climate control
- Ventilated front seats
- Panoramic sunroof
- Six airbags
- Electronic stability control
- 360-degree camera
- Hill descent control
- Adrenox connected features
The SUV measures 4,662mm in length and has a 2,750mm wheelbase. It also offers a ground clearance of around 187mm, which is useful on uneven roads as per Autocar India.
Price in India
The Scorpio-N price varies widely by engine, seating layout and trim. Mahindra’s official online listings show petrol variants starting around Rs. 13.99 lakh ex-showroom, while higher variants can cross Rs. 20 lakh. Diesel and four-wheel-drive versions cost more depending on equipment and transmission.
The Scorpio Classic is positioned at a lower price than the Scorpio-N and appeals to buyers who prefer a simpler diesel SUV.

Key rivals
The Scorpio-N competes with the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV 7XO, MG Hector Plus and Kia Carens. The Toyota Innova Hycross is also an alternative for buyers who prioritize comfort and hybrid efficiency.
The Scorpio-N has an advantage in engine performance, road presence and four-wheel-drive capability. The Kia Carens and Toyota Innova, however, are more focused on easy family travel and comfortable third-row seating.
Who should consider it
The Scorpio-N suits buyers who want a powerful, commanding SUV for both city and highway use. It is also a sensible option for people who regularly travel on hilly or rough roads.
It may not be ideal for someone who wants a compact, fuel-efficient city vehicle or the most comfortable third row. Buyers should take a proper test drive before deciding, especially if all seven seats will be used regularly.
Conclusion with key takeaways
The Mahindra Scorpio remains a major force in India’s 7-seater SUV market. Its powerful petrol and diesel engines, strong body-on-frame construction, spacious cabin and available four-wheel drive make it different from softer MPV-style rivals.
The Ertiga remains the overall 7-seater sales leader, but the Scorpio continues to stand out as the preferred rugged SUV choice. Buyers should compare comfort, running costs, features and after-sales support before choosing between the Scorpio and its rivals.
