Denza and JSW Motors Set Their Sights on India’s Premium Car Market

India’s premium car market could soon welcome two fresh names – Denza and JSW Motors. While Denza is BYD’s luxury-focused brand and as discussed in earlier article, JSW Motors is preparing to enter the passenger vehicle space under its own identity.
Denza is expected to target buyers looking for high-end electric vehicles, while JSW Motors may begin with a tough-looking plug-in hybrid SUV. For buyers, that could mean more choices beyond familiar names such as Toyota, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and MG.
Denza D9 could lead the brand’s India entry
Denza was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. BYD became its sole owner in 2024. Reports suggest the Denza D9 electric luxury MPV may be the company’s first Indian model, with a launch expected around late 2026 or early 2027.
The D9 is designed mainly for chauffeur-driven buyers. Think of it as a large, comfortable seven-seat people mover for business leaders or families who value rear-seat comfort. The global version gets sliding rear doors, captain seats in the middle row, a large touchscreen, a premium audio system, seat ventilation and massage functions.
CarDekho reports that the India-spec D9 is expected to use an electric powertrain with a 103 kWh battery. The final Indian specifications have not been confirmed, so buyers should wait for the official announcement before treating range or performance figures as final.
The expected Denza D9 price in India is around Rs. 80 lakh to Rs. 90 lakh, ex-showroom. Its closest rivals could include the MG M9, Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM.
Denza Z9 GT may follow as a performance-focused EV
The Denza Z9 GT is another model being linked to India. Unlike the D9, this is a sleek electric fastback aimed at buyers who want luxury with stronger road presence and performance.
Reports place its expected price between roughly Rs. 1.10 crore and Rs. 1.50 crore, ex-showroom. At that level, it could compete for attention with cars such as the BMW i5 and Porsche Taycan. However, Denza has not yet announced the final India lineup, launch dates or variants, so these details remain tentative.
JSW Motors may begin with a plug-in hybrid SUV
JSW Motors is separate from the JSW MG Motor India joint venture. The company is reportedly planning its own new vehicle brand and aims to offer several new-energy vehicles over the coming years.
According to Business Standard, JSW Motors’ first product is expected to be based on the Jetour T2 from China’s Chery Automobile. It is likely to be a plug-in hybrid SUV, which combines a petrol engine with an electric battery that can be charged externally. This setup can be useful for owners who make short city trips on electric power but still want petrol-engine support for long highway drives.
The expected starting price is above Rs. 35 lakh, ex-showroom. The SUV is likely to appeal to buyers considering the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq. A second JSW model in the Rs. 18 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh range has also been reported, although its name and full specifications are not public yet.
Why these launches matter
Denza could bring more choice to the luxury electric MPV and premium EV space. Meanwhile, JSW Motors may test whether Indian buyers are ready for more plug-in hybrid options in the premium SUV segment.
Price, service quality, charging support and long-term reliability will matter as much as features. A well-equipped vehicle may attract attention, but a strong ownership experience will decide whether these brands earn lasting trust.
