India’s UPI system is getting two important upgrades. NPCI has introduced UPI Tap & Pay and an AI-powered support tool called My UPI, giving users a faster way to pay and an easier way to manage UPI-related queries.

The features were unveiled at Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. While the announcement was reported on September 10 and September 11, 2026, the larger idea is simple – make UPI work with less friction, fewer steps, and better user support.

What Is UPI Tap & Pay

UPI Tap & Pay is a contactless payment feature. Instead of scanning a QR code, users can tap an NFC-enabled phone on a compatible UPI Smart Tag, Smart QR, or point-of-sale terminal.

NFC means near-field communication. In simple words, it lets two nearby devices exchange payment information when they are brought close together. Many debit and credit cards already use similar tap-to-pay technology.

For example, if you are at a grocery store, metro counter, cafe, or parking booth, you may not need to open the camera and scan a QR code. You can unlock your phone, choose Tap & Pay in a supported UPI app, enter the amount if needed, tap the device, and complete the payment.

How UPI Tap & Pay Works

As per NPCI’s product information, UPI Tap & Pay captures the receiver’s UPI ID through NFC instead of using the phone camera. For smaller payments, UPI Lite can handle the transaction if it is enabled. For higher-value payments, users may need to enter their UPI PIN.

Reports say the feature can support online PIN-less payments up to Rs. 5,000 in some cases, while offline UPI Lite X transactions may be capped at Rs. 500 per transaction, with a Rs. 2,000 wallet balance limit.

This can be useful in places where mobile internet is weak. Think of underground stations, crowded events, toll points, flights, or remote shops where QR scanning and network loading can slow things down.

What Is My UPI Assistant

My UPI is an AI-powered assistant and unified dashboard for UPI users. It is designed to help people view transactions, manage mandates, handle UPI-related questions, and get support without jumping across multiple apps.

According to ETBFSI, My UPI is built on NPCI’s Small Language Model called FiMI. In simple terms, it is an AI system trained to understand payment-related queries and guide users in a conversational way.

A user may ask about a failed payment, check an autopay mandate, or understand a UPI transaction issue. Instead of searching through settings or waiting for basic support, My UPI could make the process faster and clearer.

Who Will Benefit Most

Everyday UPI users will benefit because payments may become quicker, especially for small purchases.

Small shops and street vendors may also gain, as tap-based UPI can reduce scanning errors and payment delays. For busy counters, even a few seconds saved per transaction matters.

Senior citizens and first-time digital payment users could benefit from My UPI if the assistant explains things in simple language. Businesses, banks, and payment apps may also see fewer routine support queries if users can solve basic issues themselves.

Market Overview

UPI Tap & Pay will compete with card-based contactless payments, mobile wallets, and cash for small everyday purchases. But UPI has one big advantage in India – it is already widely used across shops, apps, and bank accounts.

For My UPI, the comparison is more with customer support systems inside apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and bank UPI apps. If NPCI’s assistant becomes widely available, it may give users a more common support layer across the UPI ecosystem.

Conclusion and Key Takeaways

UPI Tap & Pay and My UPI show that India’s digital payment system is moving beyond basic scan-and-pay. The next step is speed, convenience, offline support, and smarter help.

Key takeaways –

  • UPI Tap & Pay lets users make payments by tapping an NFC-enabled phone.
  • My UPI is an AI-powered assistant for UPI support and transaction help.
  • Small payments, travel payments, and low-network areas could see real benefits.
  • Users, merchants, banks, and payment apps may all gain from smoother payment journeys.
  • Official rollout and feature availability may depend on banks, UPI apps, and supported devices.
