India’s PM E-DRIVE scheme is showing how quickly electric mobility is moving beyond a niche market. The latest dashboard snapshot recorded 11,47,889 registered and temporary EVs for FY 2026-27 as of 21 October 2026.

At the same time, the government has approved support for 8,147 public EV chargers across three oil marketing companies and 10 states. Together, these figures show progress, but they also need to be read carefully.

What the 11.47 lakh EV number actually shows

The dashboard figure is a financial-year registration snapshot, not the total number of EVs sold in India since the scheme began. It includes 10,41,183 registered vehicles and 1,06,706 temporary registrations.

Electric two-wheelers form the biggest share, with more than 11.41 lakh entries. E-rickshaws, e-carts and e-trucks make up a much smaller part of the total. This is not surprising. Scooters are usually the easiest first EV purchase for urban riders because running costs can be lower and home charging is often possible.

For example, a commuter travelling 25 km daily may find an electric scooter easier to manage than an electric car, especially when public chargers are still unevenly available.

Charging approvals are not the same as live chargers

The 8,147-charger figure is encouraging, but it does not mean every charger is already working. The Ministry of Heavy Industries had approved Rs. 851 crore for their deployment by 28 September 2026. These approvals cover three oil marketing companies and 10 states as mentioned in PIB press release.

A charger becomes genuinely useful only after it is installed, connected to power, open to the public and compatible with the vehicle. For an EV owner planning a highway trip, the key question remains simple – is there a working charger on the intended route?

Why PM E-DRIVE matters

PM E-DRIVE was launched to support faster EV adoption, expand charging infrastructure and strengthen India’s EV manufacturing ecosystem. It covers electric two-wheelers, selected three-wheelers, e-buses, e-trucks, e-ambulances, charging facilities and testing upgrades.

Eligible electric two-wheeler buyers can receive an upfront incentive through an e-voucher, subject to the scheme’s terms and model eligibility. The current support for eligible registered e-two-wheelers is Rs. 2,500 per kWh, capped at Rs. 5,000 per vehicle.

Facts Input- 1, 2, 3

India’s electric vehicle story has reached an important point. For the last few years, government subsidies helped make EVs more attractive for buyers and gave companies the confidence to launch new models. Now, the auto industry is being told to prepare for a future where this support will slowly reduce.

At the SIAM Annual Convention, Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi said EV subsidies and government support will come to an end in the coming years, and companies must be ready to stand on their own. This does not mean subsidies will stop tomorrow. But it does mean the industry cannot depend on government discounts forever.

Why EV subsidies were given in the first place

EV subsidies were created to make electric vehicles cheaper for early buyers. In a new market, prices are usually high because batteries, motors, electronics and charging systems are still scaling up.

Schemes like FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE helped reduce the upfront cost of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, buses and charging infrastructure. The PM E-DRIVE scheme has an outlay of Rs. 10,900 crore, and later reports said support for electric two-wheelers was extended till March 31, 2028, with extra allocation for the segment.

In simple words, subsidies acted like a push. They helped buyers try EVs and helped companies build demand.

Will EV prices rise for buyers

Yes, EV prices can rise if subsidies reduce and companies do not cut costs at the same time.

For example, if an electric scooter currently gets a direct incentive, the buyer pays less at the showroom. Once that support goes away, the company has three choices. It can pass the full increase to the customer, absorb some cost itself, or reduce prices through better manufacturing and local sourcing.

The final effect will depend on the segment. Electric two-wheelers may feel the impact more because buyers are price-sensitive. Electric cars may be less affected by direct purchase subsidies, as many private electric cars already depend more on tax benefits, state incentives, lower running cost and brand offers.

What automakers need to do now

For companies, the message is clear. EVs must become strong products, not just subsidy-driven products.

Automakers will need to localize batteries, battery management systems, motors, controllers and other key parts. Localization simply means making more parts in India instead of importing them. This can reduce costs, improve supply, and protect companies from currency changes or global shortages.

They also need to spend more on research and development. Buyers will not accept weak range, slow charging, poor service or expensive battery replacement just because the vehicle is electric. The product has to make sense in daily life.

Companies such as Tata Motors, Mahindra, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, TVS, Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp, Hyundai, MG Motor and BYD will all face this pressure in different ways.

Effect on common people

For common people, the end of subsidies is not only bad news. It can also make the EV market healthier in the long run.

When subsidies reduce, only serious companies with good products, service networks and cost control will survive. This can reduce poor-quality launches and make buyers more careful.

But in the short term, some EVs may become costlier as per reports. A family planning to buy an electric scooter or car should compare the full ownership cost. This means looking at purchase price, charging cost, petrol savings, battery warranty, service cost and resale value.

For someone who rides 40 to 60 km daily and can charge at home, an EV may still save money even with lower subsidies. But for someone with low daily usage or no charging access, a petrol, CNG or hybrid vehicle may remain more practical.

Charging will become even more important

Rizvi also pointed to charging infrastructure as a key area for the industry. This matters because buyers do not choose EVs only by price. They also ask one simple question – where will I charge it?

More public chargers, apartment charging, office charging and highway charging can reduce fear among buyers. If charging becomes easy, people may accept EVs even without large subsidies.

Conclusion with key takeaways

The possible end of EV subsidies is a natural next step for India’s electric mobility market. Subsidies helped the market start. Now the industry has to prove that EVs can win on real value.

Key takeaways –

EV subsidies in India are expected to reduce over the coming years.

Prices may rise if companies cannot reduce battery and manufacturing costs.

Electric two-wheelers could feel the impact more than premium EV cars.

Automakers must focus on local parts, better batteries, charging and service.

Common buyers should compare total ownership cost, not just showroom price.

Zenergize Technologies has raised $4 million in a Pre-Series A funding round led by Giraffe Studios. The round included a mix of equity and venture debt, with participation from several industrial entrepreneurs and angel investors.

The Gurugram-based deep-tech startup is building power electronics products for India’s clean energy and electric mobility market. In simple words, it makes EV chargers, solar inverters and related systems that help manage and convert electricity more efficiently.

What Zenergize Technologies does

Zenergize designs and manufactures advanced power electronics products in India. Its current portfolio includes AC EV chargers, DC fast chargers and solar inverters.

The company is also working on hybrid inverters and Battery Energy Storage Systems, commonly called BESS. A hybrid inverter can manage power from solar panels, batteries and the grid. BESS helps store energy for later use, which is useful for solar power, EV charging stations, factories and commercial buildings.

Zenergize says its products are designed for Indian conditions, including heat, dust, voltage changes and local grid behaviour. This is important because hardware made for Europe or China may not always perform well in Indian operating conditions.

Founder and founding year

Zenergize Technologies was founded by Navneet Daga and Dr. Veer Karan Goyal. Navneet Daga is the co-founder and CEO, while Dr. Veer Karan Goyal is the co-founder and CTO.

The company was incorporated in 2024, after years of research and development work. Its manufacturing facility is located in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh, while its corporate base is in Gurugram.

Purpose of the $4 million funding

The fresh funding will be used to expand manufacturing capacity, strengthen engineering, grow sales and service teams, and speed up research and development.

This matters because Zenergize is seeing demand from large customers. Reports say the company has reached an annual revenue run rate of more than Rs. 30 crore and has an order book above Rs. 150 crore within a year of commercialization.

The company now needs to produce more units, serve customers faster and build the operational strength needed for enterprise and OEM clients.

Why this startup matters

India’s EV and solar markets are growing, but reliable local hardware is still a major need. EV charging networks need fast chargers that can work every day without frequent breakdowns. Solar installers need inverters that can handle Indian rooftops, weather and grid issues.

For example, a logistics company using electric trucks or buses needs dependable chargers at its depot. If charging fails, vehicle operations get affected. Similarly, a solar EPC company needs inverters that can perform consistently across homes, factories and commercial sites.

Zenergize wants to solve this hardware gap with locally designed power electronics.

Competitors in the market

Zenergize competes with EV charging and solar inverter companies such as Exicom, Servotech Power Systems, Statiq, ChargeZone, Delta Electronics, Sungrow, Growatt and other Indian and global hardware players.

Its edge could come from local design, manufacturing control and its Silicon Carbide-based technology. Silicon Carbide, or SiC, helps power devices run more efficiently and handle higher power levels better.

Conclusion – Key takeaways

Zenergize Technologies’ $4 million Pre-Series A round shows growing interest in India’s clean-energy hardware startups.

The startup’s aim is to build reliable, Made-in-India EV chargers, solar inverters and power electronics for Indian conditions. The funding will help it increase production, expand its service network, hire stronger teams and develop new products.

If Zenergize can deliver quality at scale, it could become an important player in India’s EV charging and solar infrastructure market.
