CMF, the affordable sub-brand created by Nothing, is set to become a standalone Indian company. Nothing co-founder and CEO Carl Pei has said CMF will be spun out as a majority Indian-owned company, headquartered in India, with its own team and research and development operations, as per Gadgets360.

This is a big move because India is already one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturing markets, but it still lacks a strong homegrown global smartphone brand. CMF wants to fill that gap by combining India’s manufacturing strength with Nothing’s design, software and global brand experience.

What is CMF

CMF was launched by Nothing in September 2023 as a more affordable design-led brand. It started with products such as earbuds, a smartwatch and a charger, and later entered smartphones with models like the CMF Phone series.

Nothing itself was founded in 2020 by Carl Pei, who earlier co-founded OnePlus. CMF was created to make stylish and practical tech products more accessible to a wider audience.

Until now, CMF worked under Nothing. After the spin-off, it will operate as a separate India-based company, while Nothing will remain a shareholder and partner.

Why CMF is becoming Indian

As per Carl Pei’s announcement and reports from Business Standard, CMF will be majority owned by Indian shareholders and headquartered in India. The company will also build its own R&D base in the country.

The idea is not only to assemble phones in India. The bigger aim is to design, engineer, build and sell products from India to the world.

Pei has also highlighted a major gap in India’s smartphone story. India has strong manufacturing capacity and a huge domestic market, but Indian brands lost ground after the rise of Chinese smartphone companies. Earlier names like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava had strong moments, but they struggled when smartphones became more competitive.

What could change in the Indian market

If CMF executes well, it could bring fresh competition to the budget and mid-range smartphone space. Brands like Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo, Samsung, Motorola and Lava already compete hard in this segment.

CMF’s edge may come from design, clean software, community-led marketing and pricing discipline. For example, the CMF Phone 1 became popular because it looked different and offered modular-style customization at an accessible price.

The move may also push other brands to improve local R&D, not just local assembly. That is important because true smartphone capability comes from product design, software, supply chain control, testing and after-sales support.

Impact on buyers

For buyers, this could mean more choice in the Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 segment. CMF may focus on phones, earbuds, smartwatches, chargers and IoT products that look premium but stay affordable.

However, buyers should wait for execution. Becoming an Indian company does not automatically guarantee better products. CMF will still need strong service centres, reliable updates, good pricing and consistent stock availability.

Competitors and market challenge

CMF will face tough competition from Redmi, Realme, iQOO, Poco, Samsung, Motorola and homegrown players like Lava. These brands already have deep distribution, service networks and aggressive pricing.

The challenge for CMF will be to scale without losing its design identity. If it becomes just another budget phone brand, the excitement may fade. But if it can keep Nothing’s clean software and bold design approach, it can stand out.
