India’s space programme is moving on several fronts at once. ISRO is preparing for the GSLV-F18 mission carrying the NVS-03 navigation satellite on October 30, while its future launch systems and lunar plans are being presented at ESTIC 2026 in New Delhi.

These projects may sound separate, but they connect to one larger goal. ISRO wants India to have stronger navigation services, heavier launch capability, a space station, lunar exploration missions, and eventually an Indian landing on the Moon by 2040.

GSLV-F18 and the NVS-03 navigation satellite

The GSLV-F18 mission is expected to launch NVS-03, the third satellite in India’s second-generation navigation satellite series. It will support NavIC, India’s own regional navigation system.

NavIC works in a similar way to GPS. Satellites send precise timing signals, and a receiver uses those signals to calculate its position. This can help with vehicle tracking, transport operations, disaster response, marine navigation, smartphones, and strategic services.

NVS-03 is important because India needs a dependable set of navigation satellites in orbit. A functioning constellation improves the continuity and reliability of location and timing services.

The mission is scheduled for October 30 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Launch schedules can change because every system must clear final checks before liftoff.

What ISRO is showing at ESTIC 2026

The Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave, or ESTIC 2026, is being held in New Delhi from October 27 to 29. ISRO is using the event to explain the technology behind its longer-term plans.

One major exhibit is the proposed Next Generation Launch Vehicle, or NGLV. This future heavy-lift rocket is being designed to place payloads of more than 30,000 kg into low Earth orbit.

Low Earth orbit is the region where many Earth-observation satellites, communication satellites, and future space-station modules operate. A vehicle that can carry heavier payloads could reduce the number of launches needed for large missions.

ISRO says the NGLV is being developed as a partially reusable rocket using liquid oxygen and methane propellants. Reusability means part of the rocket may be recovered and used again, which could lower launch costs over time.

Chandrayaan-4 and Chandrayaan-5 explained

ISRO is also displaying its future lunar plans at ESTIC.

Chandrayaan-4 is India’s planned lunar sample-return mission. Its aim is to land on the Moon, collect samples using robotic systems, and return those samples safely to Earth. Scientists could then study lunar soil and rocks in laboratories using equipment too large to send to the Moon.

Chandrayaan-5, also known as the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission or LuPEX, is a joint mission between ISRO and Japan’s JAXA. ISRO is developing the lander, while JAXA is building the rover. The mission will study lunar material, including possible water ice, near the Moon’s south polar region.

Neither Chandrayaan-4 nor Chandrayaan-5 is a crewed mission. However, both will help India build knowledge and technology needed for its longer-term human lunar landing ambition.

The larger plan ahead

ISRO’s Space Vision 2047 sets a broad direction. It includes the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, planned for operationalization by 2035, continued Gaganyaan human-spaceflight work, new launch vehicles, and an Indian astronaut landing on the Moon by 2040.

The NVS-03 launch is a near-term mission with practical value for navigation. The NGLV and Chandrayaan missions represent the next phase, where India is building the capability to lift heavier spacecraft, conduct deeper lunar science, and support human exploration.

Conclusion

The upcoming NVS-03 mission and ISRO’s ESTIC 2026 showcase reveal two sides of India’s space programme. One is focused on improving services people and industries can use today. The other is preparing for much larger missions that may shape India’s role in space over the next decade.
