(AI Image)

Airtel has introduced new prepaid plans for people who mainly use their mobile number for calls and SMS. The plans start at Rs. 185 and do not include any mobile data.

This is useful news for feature-phone users, senior citizens and people who have Wi-Fi at home or work. But for the average smartphone user, a voice-only plan may not always be the cheapest option once the cost of separate data is added.

Airtel voice-only plans explained

As per India Today, Airtel has launched three voice and SMS-only prepaid recharges. Each plan includes unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, 300 SMS and HelloTunes. None of them provide mobile data.

Plan

Validity

Benefits

Rs. 185

28 days

Unlimited calls, 300 SMS, no data

Rs. 203

30 days

Unlimited calls, 300 SMS, no data

Rs. 206

One calendar month

Unlimited calls, 300 SMS, no data

The Rs. 185 pack is the lowest-priced option. Its effective cost is about Rs. 6.61 a day for 28 days. The Rs. 203 plan gives two additional days of validity, while the Rs. 206 pack follows the calendar month. That can be convenient for people who prefer recharging on the same date every month.

For example, a person who recharges on January 10 can expect the calendar-month plan to renew around February 10, rather than counting a fixed 28 or 30 days.

Why Airtel introduced these plans

The launch follows updated rules from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI. Under the 2026 amendment, telecom companies must offer voice and SMS-only vouchers alongside comparable short-validity prepaid plans that include data.

The move is intended to give customers a clearer choice. Earlier, users who only wanted to keep a number active for calls and OTP messages often had to buy plans that bundled data they did not need.

This matters for users who own a basic phone or use a smartphone mainly on Wi-Fi. It can also help people with a secondary SIM used only for banking OTPs, family calls or emergency use.

Are these Airtel plans cost-effective?

The answer depends on how a person uses their phone.

For a feature-phone user, the Rs. 185 plan is a straightforward option. It gives calling and a reasonable SMS allowance without making the customer pay for unused data.

It may also suit a senior citizen who mostly calls family members and uses Wi-Fi when internet access is needed. The plan keeps the bill simple and avoids daily data limits.

However, it is less attractive for a normal smartphone user who needs mobile internet for UPI, Google Maps, WhatsApp messages, ride bookings or social media outside Wi-Fi areas. Buying a separate data add-on could make the total monthly spend higher than a regular bundled prepaid recharge.

The 300 SMS limit is another point to note. It is enough for many people, but not for users who regularly send promotional, business or personal text messages.

Airtel versus other telecom operators

Airtel is among the first major operators to offer these short-validity voice-only options under the new TRAI framework. Jio and Vodafone Idea are also required to provide comparable voice and SMS vouchers, so customers should compare prices and validity before recharging.

The best plan is not automatically the lowest-priced one. A Rs. 185 recharge is good value only if mobile data has little or no importance in daily life.

Airtel has made another quiet change to its prepaid recharge portfolio, and this time the impact will be felt by users who depend on daily data plans. The company has discontinued several prepaid packs, including the popular Rs. 299 plan, which was one of Airtel’s most used 28-day unlimited packs.

This does not look like a direct tariff hike at first glance. But for many prepaid users, the effect is similar. When a lower-priced plan disappears, customers have to move to a higher-priced recharge to get similar benefits. That is why this change is being seen as an effective price hike.

According to the ToI report, Airtel’s move may increase tariffs by around 3 percent to 4 percent overall. However, users of the Rs. 299 plan will feel a sharper impact because they now need to recharge with the Rs. 349 pack for similar daily data benefits. That works out to a price increase of around 16 percent.

What has Airtel discontinued

Airtel has withdrawn multiple prepaid plans from its latest recharge listing. The most important change is the removal of the Rs. 299 plan.

The Rs. 299 plan earlier offered 1.5GB data per day, unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day for 28 days. For many users, this was a simple and affordable monthly recharge. Now, Airtel users who want a similar 28-day daily data plan have to choose the Rs. 349 pack.

Apart from this, Airtel has also removed some longer-validity daily data plans. These include the Rs. 319 plan with 30-day validity, Rs. 579 plan with 56-day validity, Rs. 619 plan with 69-day validity, Rs. 649 plan with 56-day validity and Rs. 799 plan with 77-day validity.

The Rs. 859 plan has also reportedly been repriced to Rs. 899. So the change is not limited to one pack. Airtel is clearly cleaning up its prepaid lineup and pushing users toward fewer, higher-value plans.

Why Airtel may have removed these plans

The main reason appears to be ARPU growth. ARPU means average revenue per user. In simple words, it shows how much money a telecom company earns from each customer.

Airtel has been saying for some time that telecom pricing in India needs to improve. The company has earlier stated that mobile ARPU should move above Rs. 300 so telecom operators can keep investing in network quality, spectrum and new technology.

This latest move fits that direction. By removing lower-priced daily data plans, Airtel can slowly move users toward higher recharge amounts without announcing a broad price hike for every plan.

There is also another practical reason. Telecom companies often reduce overlapping plans to make the recharge portfolio simpler. If too many packs offer similar benefits with small price differences, users may choose the cheaper one. Removing those lower-priced options helps the company guide customers toward selected plans.

How users are affected

The biggest impact is on users who recharged with the Rs. 299 plan.

Earlier, they paid Rs. 299 for 1.5GB data per day for 28 days. Now, the nearest similar option is Rs. 349. That means users pay Rs. 50 more for a comparable monthly daily data pack.

For students, budget users and people who recharge every month, Rs. 50 may not look huge once. But over a year, it becomes Rs. 600 extra if the same pattern continues.

Long-validity users may also feel the change. Plans like Rs. 579, Rs. 619 and Rs. 799 helped users avoid frequent recharges. With these packs removed, customers may need to choose a different validity pack or pay more upfront.

The Rs. 199 and Rs. 219 entry-level packs are still available for now, according to the report. But these are not the same as full daily data plans. They are more useful for people who need basic calling and limited data.

Cheapest Airtel unlimited daily data plan now

After the removal of the Rs. 299 pack, the Rs. 349 plan is now Airtel’s cheapest unlimited 28-day daily data prepaid option.

This plan becomes important because it is now the new entry point for users who want daily data with unlimited calling. For heavy WhatsApp users, YouTube viewers, Instagram users and people working on mobile data, this is the plan they may now have to consider.

However, users should check the Airtel Thanks app or Airtel website before recharge because plan availability can vary by circle and can change over time.

Competitor angle

Airtel is not the only telecom company trying to improve revenue. Jio and Vi have also revised or removed plans in the past.

The difference is in timing and positioning. Airtel often focuses on premium customers and better ARPU. Jio usually competes strongly on data value and scale. Vi is trying to balance affordability with revenue improvement.

For users, the smart move is simple. Compare Airtel, Jio and Vi plans in your area before recharging. But do not look at price alone. Network quality, indoor signal, 5G availability and customer support also matter.

Conclusion with key takeaways

Airtel’s latest prepaid plan changes show how telecom companies can raise effective prices without calling it a full tariff hike. The removal of the Rs. 299 plan is the biggest change because it directly affects users who want an affordable 28-day daily data pack.
