Tata Communications plans to invest $400–450 million in a new fibre network designed to connect India’s AI and data centre hubs. The company calls it an “AI Super Highway”. The plan is to lay around 10,000 km of fibre in stages, starting with a corridor linking Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai as per Tata’s Press release.

The project is aimed at the growing need to move large amounts of data quickly between computing centres. As more companies build infrastructure for AI and cloud services, reliable connections between those sites become part of the picture.

What the network is meant to do

AI systems rely on computing power, but the data used to train or run them often needs to travel between different locations. Fibre carries that information. A fast, dependable connection can help data centres exchange it with less delay.

Tata Communications says the new network will be built for high capacity, low delay and resilience. It plans to connect data centre clusters and AI hubs to international cable landing stations, then link them with its global network. The company says the project will be rolled out in three phases over three to five years.

For example, a business using computing facilities in both Hyderabad and Mumbai could use the network to move data between them. The proposed connections are also intended for cloud providers, AI companies and large businesses.

Where the investment will go

The first phase is planned for the Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai route. Later phases are expected to extend towards eastern and western India, including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City.

Tata Communications has said it expects to fund the project through operating cash flows. In an interview with ET, a company executive said the Mumbai–Chennai route is being designed for a round-trip delay of 15–16 milliseconds. That is a company target, not a reported result from a completed network.

Why the plan matters

The investment is a bet that data centre connectivity will become a larger business as AI and cloud computing expand. Tata Communications says the network will complement its existing terrestrial and subsea infrastructure.

There is still work ahead. Laying fibre requires route planning, permissions and construction, and the company has not announced customer contracts for the proposed network, according to Moneycontrol. The project’s impact will depend on whether the planned capacity is built on schedule and attracts enough demand.
