BMW X1 Long Wheelbase Launched at Rs. 49.90 Lakh With More Space, Tech and Luxury Features

As we discussed earlier, BMW has launched the new X1 Long Wheelbase in India at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs. 49.90 lakh. The SUV is locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai and is available in a petrol variant.

The big idea behind this model is simple. BMW has taken the regular X1 formula and added more rear-seat space, richer comfort features and updated digital technology. For Indian luxury SUV buyers, that matters because many owners prefer being driven around during the week and driving themselves on weekends.

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase, or X1 LWB, is aimed at buyers who want a compact luxury SUV but do not want to compromise on rear-seat comfort. It is also BMW’s way of making the X1 more family-friendly without moving buyers into a larger and more expensive SUV.

BMW X1 Long Wheelbase price in India

The new BMW X1 Long Wheelbase has been launched at Rs. 49.90 lakh, ex-showroom.

This is an introductory price, so it may change later. Bookings are open through BMW dealerships in India.

The SUV comes in one petrol version and gets M Sport styling as standard, according to reports. That gives it a sportier look, even though the main attraction of this version is comfort and space.

More space is the biggest change

The main reason to consider the BMW X1 Long Wheelbase is its stretched body.

The SUV measures 4,616mm in length, 2,104mm in width and 1,641mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2,800mm. BMW says it is the longest car in its segment and offers one of the most spacious rear cabins among five-seater luxury SUVs in India.

For normal buyers, wheelbase simply means the distance between the front and rear wheels. A longer wheelbase usually helps create more room inside the cabin, especially for rear passengers.

This makes the X1 LWB more useful for families, business users and people who often travel with a chauffeur. The rear seat also gets a more comfortable setup, and reports mention extra rear legroom and kneeroom compared with the standard X1.

Engine and performance

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

The engine produces 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and sends power to the front wheels.

BMW claims a fuel efficiency of 15.5 km/l. Of course, real-world mileage will depend on traffic, driving style, road conditions and air-conditioning use.

This engine is not meant for hardcore performance buyers. Instead, it is tuned for smooth city driving, easy highway cruising and everyday comfort. For a luxury family SUV, that is a sensible approach.

Exterior design and road presence

The BMW X1 LWB keeps the familiar X1 design but looks more stretched from the side. The longer rear doors and extended body help it appear more mature and premium.

At the front, it gets BMW’s signature kidney grille and Adaptive LED headlights. These headlights include cornering function and High Beam Assistant, which can help during night driving.

The SUV also gets aluminium satinated roof rails, square wheel arches, 18-inch M light alloy wheels and 3D sculpted LED tail-lamps at the rear.

The available exterior colours include Night Dusk Blue, Skyscraper Grey, Carbon Black and Mineral White.

Interior and comfort features

Inside, the BMW X1 Long Wheelbase focuses heavily on comfort.

The cabin gets a BMW Curved Display, BMW Operating System 9, ambient lighting, an M Sport steering wheel and premium upholstery options. Buyers can choose Veganza perforated upholstery in Castanea or a dual-tone Smoke White and Atlas Grey finish.

One of the key highlights is the large panoramic sunroof. BMW says it covers around 9 square feet, which makes the cabin feel more open and airy. This feature will appeal to Indian buyers because panoramic sunroofs have become a major attraction in premium cars.

The SUV also gets a Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers and 205W output. For people who enjoy long drives, podcasts or music during daily commutes, this can improve the cabin experience.

Boot space and practicality

The BMW X1 LWB offers 540 litres of boot space. If the rear seats are folded, the space can expand up to 1,700 litres.

This makes the SUV practical for airport runs, weekend trips and family travel. For example, a family of four can carry suitcases, backpacks and shopping bags without feeling too limited.

The floating centre armrest, storage areas and wireless charging setup also make the cabin more useful for daily life.

Digital features and connected tech

BMW has added several modern technology features to the X1 Long Wheelbase.

The SUV gets Digital Key Plus and Comfort Access 2.0. This allows users to lock, unlock and start the car using a compatible smartphone. Reports also mention that the digital key can be shared with multiple users.

The curved screen layout gives the dashboard a modern look. Wireless smartphone connectivity, over-the-air updates and connected car features are also part of the package.

In simple words, the X1 LWB is not only about extra space. BMW is also trying to make the ownership experience feel more digital and convenient.

Safety and driver assistance

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase gets a strong safety package.

Reports list features such as eight airbags, ABS with brake assist, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

It also gets driver assistance features such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, cruise control with braking function, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian protection and driver attention monitoring.

For city users, the 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parking assistance and reversing assistant can be very useful. The reversing assistant can remember the last 50 metres driven and help steer the car backwards along the same path. This can help in narrow lanes, tight parking spaces and crowded basement parking areas.

Competitors of BMW X1 Long Wheelbase

The BMW X1 LWB sits in a slightly unique space because there are not many direct long-wheelbase rivals in this compact luxury SUV segment.

Still, buyers may compare it with the standard BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, Mini Countryman C and Volvo XC40-style premium SUVs, depending on availability and preference.

The X1 LWB’s biggest advantage is rear-seat space. Some rivals may offer different engine options or a stronger brand pull for certain buyers, but BMW is clearly targeting people who want more cabin comfort without moving to a larger luxury SUV.

Should you buy the BMW X1 LWB

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase makes sense if rear-seat comfort is high on your list. It is also a good fit for buyers who want a luxury SUV that feels premium but is still easy to use in the city.

If you mostly drive yourself and want stronger performance, you may want to test drive it first and compare it with other petrol or diesel luxury SUVs. But if you want a spacious, feature-rich, premium five-seater with BMW badge value, the X1 LWB is worth considering.

Conclusion with key takeaways

The BMW X1 Long Wheelbase brings a more India-friendly version of the X1 to the market. At Rs. 49.90 lakh, it offers more rear-seat space, premium features, a large panoramic sunroof, modern digital tech and useful safety systems.

It is not trying to be the fastest SUV in its segment. Its real job is to offer comfort, luxury and everyday practicality in a compact premium package.
